Gutters and downspouts set right, so water runs off the roof and away from the house instead of into the fascia and the foundation.

A roof does its job by moving rain off the house. Gutters finish that job. When they sag, pull loose or pitch the wrong way, water spills over the edge, soaks the fascia board behind them and lands right beside the foundation. Over time that means rotted trim, washed-out beds and damp crawl spaces.
We set gutters with enough slope to drain toward the downspouts, fasten them solidly to the fascia, and run the downspouts so the water ends up away from the house. When we replace a roof, we look at the gutters at the same time, because the edge of the roof and the gutter behind it work as one system.
Gutters also tell you about the roof. A pile of shingle granules in them is a sign the shingles are aging, and a gutter pulled loose at one corner is often where a limb came down. If we see something like that, we will point it out.
Usually the gutter has lost its slope, is clogged near a downspout, or the downspout is too small for the roof area feeding it. We check all three and set the gutter so it drains the way it should.
Not always, but it is the right time to look. The gutters, the fascia behind them and the roof edge all meet in the same spot. If the gutters are sagging or the fascia is soft, fixing them with the roof saves a second trip.
Shingles shed some granules as they age. A little is normal, but a lot of granules, or bare patches on the shingles themselves, can mean the roof is nearing the end of its life. We can take a look and tell you where it stands.
