The Dacula area was settled around the War of 1812, but the city's 2024 plan notes it stayed mostly undeveloped until the late 20th century. You can see that in the housing. Inside city limits, about 40 percent of homes were built from 1980 to 1999, only 12 percent are older than that, and the median build year is 1999. A house from the 1990s that still has its first roof is past 25 years now, toward the end of the 20 to 30 years architectural shingles commonly last.
Dacula has a long hail record. On July 22, 2008, golf ball size hail fell in the Dacula area from a storm that sat over the same spot for up to 30 minutes and dropped three to more than four inches of rain. On April 23, 2009, hail an inch and a half wide hit the east side of town. On July 21, 2018, a report of tennis ball size hail came in near Highway 29 and Highway 316, with quarter size hail around Harbin Oaks Drive. After storms like these, dented vents and gutters are a good first clue that the shingles took hits too.
Wind does damage here too. On November 30, 2010, an EF2 tornado with gusts up to 130 mph touched down about five miles northwest of Dacula near Holland Park Drive and damaged 56 homes and a business, according to the weather service survey. When Irma blew through on September 11, 2017, Gwinnett County counted 73 structures with major damage, mostly from falling trees. Torn shingles, limb punctures and cracked decking are the repairs that follow a day like that.
Dacula keeps some deep roots. The Elisha Winn House on Dacula Road, built in 1812, hosted Gwinnett's first county elections in its parlor. Today Winder Highway runs through the middle of town toward Winder, University Parkway skirts downtown to the south, and the city grew about 5.9 percent a year from 2020 to 2023. Heavy rain is a regular test here, too: Irma left 3.98 inches in Dacula. Gutters that sag or downspouts that empty against the house cannot handle that much water, so we hang and pitch them to carry it clear of the foundation.
"David did a stellar job on my roof. It’s really beautiful. I own rental properties so he has actually done a few roofs for me and lots of repair and maintenance on my older roofs. He is easy to work with and so reliable."

It depends where you live. The City of Dacula's permit page lists residential roof shingle replacement as an example of work that may be exempt, and the city only issues permits inside its limits. Dacula mail goes as far north as unincorporated Hamilton Mill, and out there the county's planning department is the one to ask. The right office depends on the parcel, not the mailing address.
Yes, ideally before the next heavy rain. Dacula has hail reports from quarter size up to tennis ball size, and bruised shingles do not always leak right away. A roof inspection looks at the shingles, vents and gutters up close, and we tell you plainly whether a repair will hold or the roof needs replacing.
One came close. The November 2010 EF2 tracked through east central Gwinnett roughly five miles northwest of town, hitting homes hardest around Buford's Kirkstone subdivision. After any severe wind, look for lifted or missing shingles, bent gutters and limbs on the roof, and have it checked if you spot any of them.
All the time. Landlords use us for new roofs, repairs, and keeping older roofs maintained across multiple properties.
