Stone Mountain started as New Gibraltar, incorporated in 1839, and took its present name in 1847, two years after the Georgia Railroad reached town. Granite built the place. Design guidelines prepared for the city in 2008 say quarry stone went into hundreds of early 1900s houses, and that many homes went up between 1905 and 1930 as the granite trade grew. Just 9 percent of the city's homes were built in 2000 or later, and the median one dates to 1979. That is an old roof stock.
The Stone Mountain Historic District joined the National Register in 2000, and the city's Historic Preservation Commission reviews changes inside its local district. The 2008 guidelines list roofing changes among the work that needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, while general maintenance that keeps the same look and material does not. They also note that asphalt shingle is the district's main roofing material and call for matching materials on replacements. The district's bungalows, found around East and West Mountain streets, have low-pitched roofs with wide overhangs, so gutters and roof edges matter.
The mountain keeps its own wind records. A station on the summit, about 800 feet above the surrounding land, logged an 83 mph gust on March 21, 2017, and 72 mph during Irma that September. Those are summit numbers, not street level. Down in town, NOAA's Storm Events Database records a tree blown onto a home on 4th Street in June 2018, and quarter size hail that broke windows in Stone Mountain in March 2017.
Half of Stone Mountain's occupied homes are rented, so a lot of roofs here answer to a landlord. Rental property roofs are one of our six services: new roofs, repairs and steady upkeep for owners with several older houses. We keep the report plain: what is wrong, what fixing it takes, and whether another patch still makes sense or replacement is the smarter spend. Homeowners get the same straight answer before any work starts.

Possibly. Design guidelines prepared for the city in 2008 list changes to roofing materials among the work that needs the preservation commission's sign-off, called a Certificate of Appropriateness, while general maintenance that keeps the same look is exempt. Check with the city before work starts, and we can give you the shingle details for your paperwork.
On the summit, very. A station up there recorded an 83 mph gust on March 21, 2017, and 72 mph during Irma that September. Those readings come from about 800 feet above the surrounding land, not your street. For a house in the village, the tree NOAA logged falling onto a 4th Street home in June 2018 is the more useful warning.
Yes. New roofs, repairs and ongoing upkeep for landlords with older roofs are a regular part of what we do. With half the homes in the city rented, we write up each roof in plain language so you can make the repair or replace call with clear facts in hand.
