Statham grew up around the railroad. Tracks came through in 1890 and 1891, the town was incorporated on December 20, 1892, and its limits were drawn one mile in every direction from the Seaboard depot. The 1912 depot is still standing, and the Statham Historic District joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. About 17 percent of Statham homes were built before 1960, a bigger share than Winder's 11 percent. Roofs on houses that old deserve a careful look at the decking before any new shingles go on.
By the 1980s the town had passed 1,000 residents for the first time, and the largest group of Statham houses, 38 percent, went up between 1980 and 1999. By the 2020 census the town had 2,813 people. Architectural shingles tend to hold up for 20 to 30 years, which means a house from that stretch still wearing its first roof is at or past that mark. Another 18 percent were built from 2000 to 2009, which puts their roofs between 17 and 26 years old, at the front edge of the same window.
Most of the storm damage on record around Statham comes from wind and falling trees. County officials reported nine trees blown down on August 23, 2013, two of them landing on houses, including one on Nunnally Road. A storm on July 17, 2019 left structural damage and downed trees on the 1100 block of Baxter Court, south of town, and trees came down around Glenn Jackson Road and Bogart Jefferson Road on August 7, 2023. Quarter-size hail fell on a farm along Finch Road on March 21, 2017.
Statham runs its own building department, and it keeps a separate roofing permit application. The form asks for the scope of work, the type of material, and a pointed question: will the old roofing be left on, and if so, how many layers are on the home now? On a house that has been reshingled before, that answer is not always obvious from the ground. Our replacements are full tear-offs down to the decking, with decking replaced where needed, so you know exactly what was under there.

Statham's building department has its own roofing permit application. It asks for the job address, the scope of work, the material, expected start and end dates, and whether old roofing will stay on. The form comes from the city's Building, Code Enforcement, Planning and Zoning Department, so start there to confirm the current rules for your address.
Not automatically. A mid-1990s roof that was never replaced is about 30 years old now, the far end of what architectural shingles usually give. Age is a starting point, not a verdict. We check for granule loss, lifted or cracked shingles, soft spots and gutter problems, then walk you through what a repair would buy you versus what a replacement would.
The district on the National Register is roughly bounded by Elizabeth, 8th and 1st Streets and the CSX tracks, and the city says district maps are available at City Hall. If your house is in or near it, ask the city about any extra steps before you change the look of your roof.
